5 Signs Your Dog Has Sensitive Skin (and What to Do About It)

Let’s be real—our dogs aren’t just pets. They’re family. And just like us, they can suffer from skin sensitivities that make life less than paw-some.

If your pup is scratching more than usual or their coat isn’t looking as lush as it used to, don’t panic. Sensitive skin is common—especially among breeds like Frenchies, Terriers, and other cuties with delicate dermis.

Here are five signs your dog might be dealing with skin sensitivity, plus what you can do to help soothe their itches and restore their glow:

1. Itchy All the Time

If your dog’s constantly licking, biting, or scratching one area—especially paws, belly, or ears—that’s a red flag. Chronic itchiness can mean their skin barrier is irritated or inflamed.

2. Redness or Rashy Patches

Spotted angry-looking patches on your pup’s belly or underarms? That could be a reaction to harsh ingredients in food, grooming products, or even grass.

3. Flaky, Dry Skin

If you’re noticing little white flakes on your dog’s bed or fur, their skin might be dehydrated. Just like us, dogs can get “winter skin” or react to products that strip away moisture.

4. Dull Coat or Hair Loss

A healthy dog has a soft, shiny coat. If their fur looks dull, feels coarse, or they're losing patches, it’s time to investigate what’s happening at skin level.

5. Frequent Ear Infections or Hot Spots

These can be signs of allergies or intolerances—often triggered by artificial ingredients in their shampoo or diet.

So What Can You Do?

💧 Switch to a gentle, organic shampoo
Harsh soaps and synthetic fragrances can seriously mess with your dog’s skin. At Hamish & Boyo, we created our soothing formula specifically for dogs with sensitive skin. No nasties, just love.

🌿 Keep bath time simple
Don’t over-wash! Too many baths can strip the skin. Once every 2–4 weeks is plenty—unless they’ve rolled in something gross (again).

🥦 Check their diet & environment
Skin issues can be internal, too. Consider reviewing their food, using natural cleaning products at home, and avoiding synthetic fragrances.

Your Dog Deserves Better

Sensitive skin shouldn’t be a lifelong struggle. With the right care, your pup can get back to doing what they do best—being adorable, happy, and healthy.
